About Kathleen Gibbs
Storyteller, researcher, and lifelong learner—Kathleen Gibbs brings the past to life with heart, history, and unforgettable characters.
Kathleen’s journey as a writer began after decades spent in the classroom teaching English, German, ancient history, and more. A passionate historian and former advocational archaeologist, she draws from her deep knowledge and lived experiences to craft rich, historically grounded stories. Her debut novel, Journey of the Cheyenne Warrior, launched a growing body of work focused on Native American history, the American West, and the untold stories that shaped a nation.
Her books—including The Last Real Cowboy and the upcoming Spirit Journey; Sunshine’s Song—combine historical accuracy with compelling narratives and strong, complex characters. Kathleen’s writing is known for its vivid detail, rooted in extensive research and a heartfelt respect for the cultures and events she explores. Her Civil War novel, based on real letters from a her great great grandfather—a soldier in the army of Tennessee—to his wife, reveals her gift for uncovering intimate human stories in sweeping historical settings.
Personal background
Based in Bethany, Oklahoma, Kathleen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Language Arts and a Master’s in Southwestern Studies. A retired teacher of 30 years, she has also worked as a photo archivist and participated on nine archaeological digs. Today, she continues to write, give book talks, and share her love of history with readers across the country.
Kathleen has three children, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two dogs. She belongs to several organizations including the Oklahoma Writers Club, Western Writers of America, Oklahoma Anthropological Society, Civil War Roundtable Club, and Indian Art Club. For many years she has been actively involved in helping rescue dogs find new and better lives. An avid traveler, she has been to many places in the US and around the world.
